Today we are discussing another gem from the past, in 1997 a brilliant French film director Jean-Jacques Annaud who also gave us incredible movie like The Lover (1992) and Enemy at the Gate (2001) and many others. His first movie Black and White in Color received an academy award for best foreign language film in 1976. This movie is adaptation of the book Seven Years in Tibet by Heinrich Harrer. The main protagonist of the movie is played by Brad Pitt in one of his most memorable and magnificent role. He plays Heinrich Harrer an mountaineer from Austria who was selfish, arrogant and narcissistic kind of person who left his pregnant wife so he could write his name in history. Film starts in 1938 when Germans wants to make an impact in every field of the world, so under their administration Heinrich Harrer left on an unforgettable and unbelievable expedition.

The story took a high turn when 1939 a year in their adventure World War II starts and all of the German mountaineers took as prisoner of wars in British India. The film focuses on Heinrich Harrer multiple attempts to ran away from prison , his wife giving him divorce , his anger management issues and finally taking a refuge in Tibet.

Meeting the 14th Dalai Lama (who at the time just a kid). Heinrich Harrer teaches him about geography of world, science and western culture and learns to evolve himself as a person and mend his relationship with his son whom he never met through spiritual learning of Buddha. The film took dark turn in 1950 when Chinese military campaign in Tibetan region.

Seven Years in Tibet

Harrer and Dalai Lama ( 14th) remained great friend till the day Harrer died in 2006. In my opinion it is one of it’s own kind of story must be visited.

NOTE:Brad Pitt and Jean-Jacques Annaud with other cast members were banned to enter in China for brutally portraying Chinese image, though Jean-Jacques Annaud’ personal  ban was lifted later as he directs a movie Wolf Totem for Chinese cinema in 2015.
